I'm planning an irregular swap using the Ford/Yamaha 3.0 "SHO" engine, originally fitted in the Taurus SHO. This was, of course, a FWD setup. However the SHO engine has been successfully installed longitudinally because it shares the same block-to-bellhousing pattern as the 3.0 "Vulcan" V6 used in Aerostar vans (etc.). The usual procedure is to use an Aeorstar A4LD or the Mazda 5-speed that came in the Ranger. With the PCS module it looks like I can use the updated/stronger 4R44E. But here's my question: It's my understanding that the 5R55E uses essentially the same case and I'm wondering (with guarded hope!!) if I can mate the Aerostar 4R44E bellhousing to the 5R55E transmission. The whole setup is going into a '65 Mustang and an electronically controlled 5-speed would just be such a nice finishing touch.

Gord,
It appears that the 4R44E and 5R55E are the same case. According to my books just the computer strategy was different between them.

Russ, thanks for responding. That is the most concrete statement I've received so far. All of the research I've done indicates that I can make this swap. With respect to the casing, there was, apparently, a change in the seal for the pump in 1997 which means I"ll need to use a 3.0 litre 4R44 bellhousing from that year or newer.... I guess all that is left to be done now is to get a couple of cores to verify this exchange physically. Thanks for checking this out.
