Product Description

The TCM-2200 by Powertrain Control Solutions is designed for the OEM that requires a robust, rugged transmission control module (TCM).

Versatile Hardware
The TCM’s versatile hardware allows engineers to configure the controller for most modern electronic transmissions as well as custom transmission configurations. It is equipped with 3 frequency inputs, 10 general purpose inputs, and 8 outputs. Four of the outputs provide current monitoring for closed loop current control. The TCM complies with MIL-STD 461F, ASTM B117 (1000 hr. salt spray) and IP69K ingress protection. Other certifications available at request.

Communication
The TCM has two CAN 2.0B bus interfaces that can be configured up to 1.0Mbps and currently supports J1939. Proprietary communication protocols can be implemented for seamless vehicle integration. The TCM is also equipped with one RS-232 interface and one GM ALDL interface. These interfaces can be used for calibration, diagnostics, production line use, and much more. Windows based calibration software included.

Diagnostics
The TCM has full diagnostic capability to alert the driver when there is a problem with the transmission or one of the sensor inputs. Diagnostic trouble codes can be signaled to a light on the instrument panel, or by using a scan tool. The TCM can also data log to a laptop to help diagnose the most difficult intermittent failure scenarios.

Mount Directly On Transmission
The TCM is sealed to IP69K ingress protection levels which enables the OEM to package the module directly on the transmission. This greatly reduces wire harness complexity and cost. This also provides the ability to ship transmission packages complete with the controller already installed. Installation into a vehicle would only require installing the transmission, and connecting the vehicle interface connector – no complicated harness to run in and out of the cabin. Mounting brackets are available for some transmissions. PCS can assist in designing a bracket for a specific application.

Wiring Harness
PCS offers full wire harness manufacturing capability. Contact us for all of your wire harness needs from prototype to production.

The TCM-2006 contains the most I/O of all PCS TCM's. With all of its versatility, the TCM-2006 is often considered more of an engineer's toolkit than a dedicated transmission controller. We often recommend the TCM-2006 to be used for initial development. Once we help you determine which I/O is required for production, we can the help determine the most cost effective transmission controller that will meet your requirements. Since all PCS TCM's share the same control architecture, switching a calibration from one model TCM to another is a simple task. The amount of I/O on the TCM-2006 is also valuable to customers such as transmission dyno manufacturers, who need to support several different transmissions with the same controller. Changing the configuration takes seconds using the Windows software.

Product Specifications
  • 4 frequency inputs, 22 general purpose inputs, and 12 outputs
  • Optional upgrade to current monitoring on all 12 outputs (TCM-2008)
  • Black anodize finish

The Powertrain Control Solutions Universal Automatic Transmission Controller is a fully programmable transmission control system. Through a friendly PC Windows interface users are able to program transmission settings based on speed, engine load, engine speed and other parameters. When calibrated and wired properly, the controller can control almost any electronic transmission from Ford, Nissan, GM, Toyota, Chrysler and many other manufacturers. Automatic transmissions have been mass produced only in electronic versions for many years without a satisfactory aftermarket solution. Finally, Powertrain Control Solutions offers a product to control these readily available transmissions. Our unique approach to engineering in this field allows this unit to control all types of electronic automatic transmissions at a low cost. Therefore we are able to produce a unit to control more transmissions and with greater capability than our competition.

Customer Minimum Requirements

Due to all the variables and differences from vehicle to vehicle, the transmission controller is not “plug-and-play.” It will require the ability to correctly wire signals such as switched power, ground, throttle position, etc. In addition, you will need a laptop that meets all of the minimum requirements listed below. A general knowledge of the Windows operating system is also required. You will be working with files and should be able to move a file from one folder to another if necessary. In addition, most technical support issues require the customer to email the calibration and data log files to the dealer or PCS. You should be able to write an email and attach files.

Supported Transmissions

The ability to control a transmission and having a turn-key “plug-and-play” solution are two very different items. Over the years working with customers, dealers, and distributors, we have developed a list of many transmissions that are supported for the aftermarket. Some dealers have chosen to invest the time and effort in developing a calibration and supporting a transmission that PCS does not directly support. For these cases, you must purchase the controller from the specific dealer. They will also provide all the technical support. There are also a few transmissions that we can support but require a donor harness due to lack of availability of transmission specific connectors.

Vehicle Integration

The transmission controller is designed to control a transmission. The transmission controller is not designed to function in a factory environment. It does not communicate with factory body control modules, engine control modules, modern dashboards, or vehicle communication networks. If you remove your factory transmission controller, your check engine light will turn on. Many factory functions, such as cruise control, may not work. The engine may run in a limp mode. The TCU is a stand-alone transmission controller. It can not tell (and doesn’t care) whether the transmission is connected to a fuel-injected engine, a carbureted engine, or even an electric motor. If components on your vehicle are expecting to see a transmission and a transmission controller then you must first overcome those issues before purchasing a controller. A simple test is to unplug the transmission and factory transmission controller connectors and observe if there are any problems. If you would like to install the transmission controller in a factory environment, we strongly recommend you work with a dealer who has experience with installing the PCS transmission controller in that vehicle. PCS does not provide support for vehicle-specific issues that may arise when using the transmission controller.

Minimum Computer Requirements
  • Processor: Pentium 200MHz or above RAM: 24MB
  • OS: Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP (32 and 64-bit), Vista (32 and 64-bit)
  • Hard Drive Space: 20MB for install, additional space for data logs & calibrations
  • Video: 800x600 or greater resolution
  • Peripherals: CD-ROM or internet connection required to obtain software
  • Comm Port: The TCU communicates using a 9-pin RS-232 serial communication port. Please note that most new laptops do not have this port. If your laptop does not have this port, you will need to purchase a USB to Serial Port Adapter. PCS sells an adapter (part num WRE-2200) but you can purchase one from a local electronics store. If you use a USB to serial adapter, you absolutely MUST run the CD that came with the adapter before you plug it into the computer. Failure to run the USB to serial adaptor CD before plugging in the adapter will prevent communication to the TCU.
